25 Years of the C64

Introduced in January 1982, the Commodore 64 quickly became the single best-selling personal computer of all time. Thanks to its mass-market affordability -- its sticker price dropped to $400 within a year of release -- 30 million C64s were sold between 1982 and 1994.

These days, the C64 is not remembered for advances in programming or productivity. Instead, its followers fondly look back on one of the most successful and influential video-game consoles of the 1980s. The 1-MHz computer sported more graphical and auditory horsepower than machines twice its price.

On the Commodore 64’s 25th anniversary, we cast a nostalgic look back into gaming’s past. Join us on a journey back to 1982 -- when men were men, headbands were fashionable, and programs could take half an hour just to load.
